My first RV camping trip this year was with my best buddy, Scott Oglesby, who flew in from his home in NYC. We took a road trip up the California Coast beginning at Wrights Beach (just north of Bodega Bay) on May 1st and brought both dogs, Ben and Biggs with us. Two nights at Wrights then Salt Point State Park for one night which is where this photo was taken. Then on to Van Damme State Park near Mendocino (the least impressive campsite). Then lastly to MacKerricher State Beach (Just north of Ft. Bragg) which was pretty awesome, for two nights. Saw whales and newborn seals along with an amazing array of wildflowers. It was truly a fantastic trip! More pics and a post are here.
French Meadows was my first mountain campout this year and the first time I had fished in probably 25 years. I got a nice German Brown Trout within my first half hour of fishing. This kinda spoiled me and was chalked off to beginners luck until I started finally catching fish again late August. The lake was way down due to the lack of snowfall last winter but the campground was way less than full, which I prefer. Very nice trip indeed. More pics and a post here. June 15-17
We went to Sugar Pine – Giant Gap campground, twice this year 6/21 and 7/19. Both times we were unable to get my favorite site #11. Its not reservable so its hit and miss as to whether its available or not. The lake is beautiful and has a great 4 mile path around it which we always hike. Swimming is always good too, with nice beach entrances. Fishing, not so good, and it felt a bit crowded these two times. We decided we will probably only visit this one, once a year from now on. There were quite a few bears tho, as evidenced by their skat droppings.
Seven times this year! Can you tell its my favorite? Actually Loon Lake recently became my favorite, but I do love Jackson Meadows and the sunsets. My favorite site is #34, at the end of the campground and a straight shot to the water. I was able to get this most of the time. First trip was end of June at the opening and Pass Creek was running with nice little waterfalls. Last trip was in November where my preferred campground of East Meadows was closed but I was able to camp at the Pass Creek CG which was left open. I had the whole lake to myself for three days! Got down to 35 in the morning in the RV. I had two trips where I spent 4 nites otherwise it was generally 2-3 nites. Blogs on these trips are linked here… 6/28, 7/12, 7/24, 8/11, 8/26, 10/14, and 11/4.
I hadn’t booked 6 months in adance so I was unable to get a nice campsite at Loon Lake until the fall when they take off reservations. So I went 10/2 just before it closed. I hadn’t been here in maybe 4-5 years and forgot how awesome it was. Just gorgeous even with the lake down. I caught 5 nice trout here. The fishing was fantastic, getting bites constantly two days. Huge winds one nite and day causing some fishing boats on the shore to get swamped. Great campsite #17. Lots of sun and great hikes along shore or on the Rubicon Trail. It is now my favorite spot. More nice photos here.
For Kate’s birthday (and halloween) we camped at Wrights Beach in the Sonoma State Park, just north of Bodega Bay. Took our bikes and the dogs and had a great time. Wonderful weather. More pics here.
