Wrights Lake

Wrights Lake

Once again Jackson Meadows was cancelled so I found the last remaining campsite at Wrights Lake.  One of our favorite spots and often hard to get into.  We sold Doug, my old RV and bought Bertha.  A big 27′ Class A Winnebago.  Eight and a half feet wide so it took some getting used to driving.  In fact on our way out I went slightly off onto the shoulder while giving space to oncoming vehicles in a very narrow road. However, the shoulder was damaged from the weather with a huge gash in the asphalt and when I hit it, I heard a hissing sound.  We pulled off shortly thereafter near the Icehouse Resort, and saw that the tire was half flat.  We got back to the resort, parked and called AAA.  About 2.5 hours later they arrived.  Turned out I had bent the rim on that pot hole.  The spare did not fit (apparently it was for a Ford chassis instead of the Chevy Workhorse chassis on this Winnebago) but luckily the AAA guy was able to pound out the dent and fill the tire, which then held air just fine.  We were then on our way but the road was basically single lane in many spots and oncoming traffic resulted in lots of white knuckles till we got to the lake.

Wrights lake is on the border of Desolation Wilderness and has stunning views of the Sierra plus an abundance of wild flowers and beautiful streams.  Just a gorgeous place and we were there in prime time.  We brought our inflatable Sea Eagle kayak and used it two days, going back into the reeds past the bridge near the trail head to Twin Lakes.  It was just amazing.   Unfortunately we weren’t able to hike up into the granite because Ben is just at three months since his surgery and that would be too long of a hike for him.  However, he did go a good 2.5 miles one day around the lake and maybe as much as three miles the next when we hiked up Silver Creek.  He’s definitely getting his strength back.  But he is scared of the ramp we need to get him into the motorhome and that took some pushing and pulling.  Charlie had a ball, going off leash quite a bit of the time when we did our walks around the lake.  He has an infinite amount of energy.

The new motorhome, a 2006 Itasca Sunova 26P, was just great.  So much room and everything worked.  Kate even took a shower this time.  The queen bed with memory foam top was as comfy as our home bed, if not more.  I have a couple tweeks I want to do it however.  I want to add Solar to the roof, and also put in a fantastic fan in the living room.  Also later on I want to replace the TV that is in there with a lighter flat screen that runs on ac/dc and a dvd player.

Here is the video of our walk around the lake and up Silver Creek and kayaking in the reeds.

  1. Hey Geoff & Kate
What an experience in the new motor coach an Itasca, a big one at 27 feet. It sounds great. Your mechanic from AAA sounds like he really went above the call of duty by fixing the rim. I hope he earned a nice tip for his effort.
All your photos are fantastic, especially the dogs. They sure seem to be good buddies.
Geoff, you have really become a fisherman in retirement, fly fishing, wow.
Well you guys enjoy your new coach, pure luxury. Keep up the good work putting out the blog on
each trip. They are great reading about your trips.
Take care & keep in touch.

  2. Awesome photos, as always! Looks like a wonderful time was had by all, and you two & the critters look great and happy. You were lucky with the AAA guy! Bet that was a bit stressful. I miss the Sierra’s, and you guys.
    xo

  3. You, Kate, and Ben and Charlie, all look relaxed and enjoying it all. I enjoyed reading about your

first “voyaging” in Bertha. It had to be a bit scary the first time out, and the tire incident had to

give you some concern. Luckily the AAA fellow was so accommodating. The pictures are great

as usual. Ben and Charlie sure make a great pair together. Looks like you are doing fine

    with your fly fishing.

I enjoy reading your bother George’s response to your blogs.

    Love Mom
